In the progressing internet era – besides people, machines are also able to use the internet. This is known as IoT or Internet of Things. Consumer society is already familiar with home appliances that can be connected to the internet. Such devices can be monitored or controlled by the user from anywhere on the planet.
This kind of appliances are becoming more and more popular, and IoT becomes an indispensable feature which every successful product must have. Think for example of some temperature and humidity sensor in the newborn’s room. Mothers can be sure that their babies are sleeping in the perfect conditions. IoT makes it possible to control it from anywhere as well. Next room or next city, it does not matter.
For its popularity, Hexiwear can thank its cloud support that it had from the very beginning. WolkSense as the first platform to come with Hexiwear was very easy to use, but regarding configurability and options a bit limited. Because of that, we migrated to the new Clickcloud platform with far more options and ways to customize for your own needs. ClickCloud is customized version of the Wolkabout IOT Platform with more possibilities and exciting new options.
The communication between your Hexiwear and cloud is still being done through a phone with an android host application that has the role of a gateway. Data that you received from Hexiwear can be monitored through web application but also on your Android or iOS application distributed by Wolkabout.
This step by step guide will walk you through the basic functionality of the new platform, such as creating a device and monitoring of your measurements, but we will also briefly describe just connecting the Hexiwear and phone with an Android or iOS application, although this is already known to older users.
Hardware, Software and Account preparation
Before the main instructions in this “step by step” manual is presented, please make sure that your main chip (MK64) on your Hexiwear is already preprogrammed with the newest version of firmware that can be found on our github account. Details about firmware installation can be found on the manual webpage.
An account on ClickCloud platform is possible to open from the host application on your phone, but our suggestion is to do that from the browser instead. That way, you will get a better impression about application and options that are offered. In this manual, we will focus on the situation when you use the web application and you’re accessing from your browser on PC.
After you access the cloud for the first time you will see empty dashboards. There will be no devices available but what will you be able to find is predefined Hexiwear manifest. You can access it by clicking on “devices” in the navigation menu, and then “device manifest” and finally “HEXIWEAR” in the list of the available manifests.
You probably notice that on the list of sensors on HEXIWEAR manifest you can find all sensors that are available on Hexiwear . This manifest will make it easier for you to create “Hexiwear device”. All you need to do is add the name of the device, in a few easy steps.
In order to create a device that will be used for showing measurement from your Hexiwear, it is necessary to go to “devices” in the main menu, and then click on the “+” button, then “create device” in the dialog box that will open. After that, you need to choose HEXIWEAR manifest from the drop-down menu that can be found on the right side and then click “next step” that will open a dialog in which you need to put a name of your device and a device key.
What is very important for you to know is that “device key” is not something you should enter yourself. By clicking on the “Save” button device key and password will be automatically given. After this, you need to click on “OK” and return to the “Devices” window in which we can now see our device under the name we earlier defined.
On the cloud application page, these are only necessary steps that are required to do in order to have a possibility to establish first communication between Hexiwear and cloud.
Pairing Hexiwear and telephone application
After you installed host application on your android device you should turn on Bluetooth and sensor tags on Hexiwear. When all mentioned is done you can start your Hexiwear application on the phone. The application will ask for Bluetooth to be turned on if it’s not already activated and start scanning available devices. If everything is set correctly, a pin code will appear on the Hexiwear. Pin code should be entered into Hexiwear application so you can pair successfully. After entering the code, you will see a dialog box with questions ‘with which device created on the cloud you want to pair’, on the telephone screen.
As you already assume, that means that it is possible to create more devices on the cloud side, and simultaneously send data from more than one Hexiwear. In that case, you will need more telephones on which you need to install Hexiwear application, but the possibility is there.
Settings and sending data to the cloud
After pairing is complete, you will see the results of sensor measurements from Hexiwear on your screen. By default, sending data to the cloud is turned off, so you need to turn it on by clicking on the cloud in the toolbar application. Additionally, you could go to “Settings” and change period and which data (results from which sensor) will be sent to the cloud.
The final result is that you can see your data on your cloud after the specified period you set previously.
Besides the possibilities that we described here, Clickcloud is offering many other options. It could be said that this was only the intro, and the shortest way in order to connect Hexwear and Cloud.
We still didn’t go through all options, such as creating a dashboard and widget, but we will surely do so in one of our future articles. We’re leaving up to you to look around. We are always giving our best to make sure everything is as simple as possible, and our opinion is that we made it this time. Let us know what you think! Feel free to leave a feedback in the comments.
Besides dashboards and widgets that are very visual, there are options like reports, where you can see a complete report about measurements in the desired time. There are also “rules” that are enabling automatic sending of email and push notifications if certain conditions are met.
Stay tuned, because we’re preparing many new things for ClickCloud. We will also go through all mentioned features in the future articles, and we’re also expecting your suggestions and feedbacks regarding ClickCloud.
